Honda Research Institute is conducting advanced research in the fields of marine environments and autonomous vessel technologies. To support the development of Honda's next-generation autonomous navigation systems for marine applications, you will lead cutting-edge research projects and real-world trials in collaboration with Honda’s global researchers and academic partners. Your work will play a critical role in delivering foundational research that will enable Japan's vessel development team to drive future innovations.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Provide future research strategy plan. Provide a clear direction for the research activities of multiple team members and effectively utilize resources.
  • Participate in collaborative projects related to automated vessel research involving industry, government, academia, and Honda.
  • Coordinate with different internal department on future needs, technology transfer and production needs.
  • Engage in brainstorming activities related to the marine field, mobility, and robotics application projects.
  • Conduct research in the field of marine robotics, focusing on perception, localization, mapping, control and motion planning.
  • Assist with documentation tasks, including writing papers, creating slides, and drafting documentation related to technology transfer.
  • Perform simulation tests and real-world prototype validation tests.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Master’s in any one of the following disciplines, or in a similar discipline:
    • Robotics engineering, Naval engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Science or another quantitative field
  • Proven experience in solving loosely defined problems.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, with the ability to act as a safe testing lead.
  • Exceptional skills in decision-making, prioritization, problem-solving, interpersonal communication, presentations, and relationship-building.
  • Successfully leads projects by involving team members and fostering their growth through the project.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively both independently and in a small team environment.
  • High level of engineering discipline and analytical expertise.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply new technologies effectively.
  • Outstanding skills in investigation, organization, analysis, project management, and process improvement.
  • Ability to work overtime and travel as required by projects.

 

Bonus Qualifications

 

  • ​10+ years of experience in different work disciplines in both technical and managerial positions
  • 2+ years in Robotics coding tools such as Python, MATLAB, C/C++, ROS I/II
  • Open to work on new and diverse projects as well as developing deeper research in a specific area
  • Experience creating and using advanced tracking and mapping tools
  • Experience in machine learning algorithms, deep learning, LLM, statistics and AI methodologies
  • Experience with Robotics systems overall. Familiarity with motion planning and control algorithms 
  • Familiarity with marine robotics, worked on USV applications and familiar with marine based challenges
  • Strong mathematical backgrounds. Able to formulate equations, system ID and plant models
