Robotics Research Engineer (Control and Path Planning Focus)

Honda Research Institute is researching advanced technologies in the marine environment and automated vessel domain. Our team is looking for a motion planning expert, who understand planning, advanced controls, reference trajectories, and path generation theories, machine learning and robotics engineering. You will work on vessel trajectory planning, advanced controls and collaborate with AI and Robotics experts, global Honda researchers, and academic partners on research projects and real-world trials.

Key Responsibilities

- Research in the marine robotics field with focus on motion planning, control, reference paths, and system modeling
- Keep abreast of the latest theories and algorithms in the perception field. For example, MPC and MPC related topics, MPPI, and other path planning methods
- Assist in documentation: writing papers, slides and tech transfer related documentation
- Develop software for early-stage prototypes and proof of concept systems - strong experience with ROS I/II, Python, C++ and other coding languages
- Conduct simulation tests, and target tests
- Familiarity with localization methodology and control actuators
- Familiarity with machine learning, generative AI, deep learning and other ML concepts
- Participate in brainstorming activities related to mobilities and robotics application project(s)
- Participate in industry, government, academia and Honda collaboration projects related to automated boat research
Minimum Qualifications

- Master’s or PhD degree (Preferred) in any one of the following disciplines, or in a similar discipline:
- Robotics Engineering, naval engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mechanical and eletrical engineering
- Demonstrated experience in motion planning, reference trajectories and control topics
- Demonstrated experience solving loosely defined problems
- 2+ years in Robotics coding tools such as Python, MATLAB, C/C++
- Experience creating and using advanced control algorithms and motion planning
- Experience in machine learning algorithms and AI methodologies
Bonus Qualifications

- Experience with Robotics systems overall. Familiarity with perception and tracking algorithms
- Familiarity with marine robotics, worked on USV applications and familiar with marine based challenges
- Experience programming within Unix-based operating systems, such as Linux
- Programming in Python, ROS I/II, Observer Models
