Through the creation of avatars and autonomous intelligent entities, HRI's robotics program is positioning robots to work alongside humans in collaborative, scalable networks aimed at extending human capabilities. Physical human-robot interaction scientist will innovate and participate in key areas of robot behavior design including interaction control, collaborative and safe interaction planning, haptics, perception, and communication.

Position Introduction

​Honda Research Institute USA (HRI-US) in San Jose, California, is looking for a passionate and self-motivated physical human-robot interaction scientist to join our Robotics team. Through the creation of avatars and autonomous intelligent entities, HRI's robotics program is positioning robots to work alongside humans in collaborative, scalable networks aimed at extending human capabilities. Physical human-robot interaction scientist will innovate and participate in key areas of robot behavior design including interaction control, collaborative and safe interaction planning, haptics, perception, and communication. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, ideate, and implement novel model- and learning-based robot behaviors and pHRI interaction control algorithms with guaranteed safety and embedded adaptability to enable safe physical interactions between humans and robots. Validate the results on real robots.
  • Research, ideate, and implement robot perception, cognition, and communication models for physical human-robot interaction.
  • Collaborate with our team of engineers and scientists in Honda’s regional and global R&D offices,  as well as with our partners in academia and industry.
  • Supervise research interns.
  • Contribute to a portfolio of patents, academic publications, and prototypes to demonstrate research value.

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • ​Ph.D., or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, computer science, or a related field.
  • Expert knowledge in interaction control design for pHRI, including admittance/impedance and force control, robot kinematics, dynamics, control systems, and haptics.
  • Knowledge on learning-based methods such as reinforcement learning and inference models.
  • Hands-on experience in implementation of real-time control algorithms on robotic manipulators, preferably for pHRI applications.
  • Design, implementation and integration of planners, controllers, and perception systems, data acquisition and analysis, software development and debugging.
  • Solid programming skills in Python or C++, and strong familiarity in ROS.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including development and delivery of presentations, proposals, and technical documents.
  • Enthusiastic to learn new skills and expand the areas of expertise to advance the research.
  • Strong publication record in robotics conferences and journals (e.g ICRA, IROS, RSS, ICORR, NeurIPS, ICLR, RA-L, T-RO, IJRR, RAS, …).
Bonus Qualifications
  • ​Hands-on experience with exoskeletons.
  • Experience with tele-robotics (teleoperation).
  • Experience in modeling, simulation, and analysis of human motions.
  • Experience in Deep Learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or Pytorch.
