Research Intern: Disturbance-Resilient Motion Control for Marine Robotics

Job Number: P26INT-29
Honda Research Institute USA (HRI-US) is seeking a motivated and innovative research intern to develop and validate disturbance-resilient control algorithms for marine robots operating under wind, waves, and currents. The core focus is estimating environmental disturbances and compensating for them using model-based controllers, such as model predictive control (MPC). The algorithms will first be validated in simulation and then on a full-scale test vessel. You will also have the opportunity to explore learning-based control.
San Jose, CA

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop disturbance estimation and compensation methods for wind, waves, and currents.
  • Implement model-based controllers (e.g., MPC) for trajectory tracking, path following, and station-keeping under environmental disturbances.
  • Identify and refine vessel dynamics models from field data.
  • Build closed-loop simulations to evaluate robustness before deployment.
  • Support deployment and testing of controllers on a full-scale test vessel.
  • Explore reinforcement learning or other learning-based control as an extension.
  • Document results and contribute to publications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. candidate in robotics, mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of model-based control, including model predictive control (MPC).
  • Experience implementing control algorithms in simulation or on hardware.
  • Proficiency in Python or C++.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Ph.D. candidate in a related field.
  • Experience with motion control for surface vessels or other marine robots.
  • Experience with disturbance estimation/rejection, robust control, or adaptive control.
  • Experience with system identification or vessel dynamics modeling.
  • Experience with ROS 2.
  • Hands-on experience with maritime simulation environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to take algorithms beyond simulation, such as field deployment on real hardware.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning or other learning-based control methods.
  • Publication record in robotics or control venues (e.g., ICRA, IROS, CDC, ACC).
