Navigation in High-Risk Situations

Job Number: P23INT-51
This project focuses on developing a navigation (decision-making, motion planning, and trajectory generation) methodology that is able to operate in high-risk situations, particularly when a crash is highly likely or potentially unavoidable, meaning that no safety guarantees are available. This entails evaluating the risk profile of the environment to determine when to trigger the crash mitigation algorithm as well as designing the actual crash mitigation algorithm. This task requires utilizing concepts from the areas of risk analysis, optimization, probabilistic modeling, trajectory planning, and robotics to develop algorithms that are real-world deployable.
San Jose, CA

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop an efficient risk evaluation strategy to activate the crash mitigation system
  • Develop metrics to assess potential crash severity and minimize them
  • Devise a real-time implementable algorithm that can perform evasive maneuvers to escape a collision, and if not possible, minimize the severity of it for all involved participants
  • Test the developed algorithms' performance in realistic simulations
  • Publish findings in a top-tier conference

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. candidate in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
  • Research experience in decision-making, motion planning, and robotics
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System)

Bonus Qualifications

  • Ph.D. candidate in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
  • Publication record in the areas of decision-making and motion planning on robotic systems

Desired Start Date 01/06/2025

Duration

3 Months
