Research Intern: Generative Models for Human Behavior and Motion

Job Number: P25INT-01
Honda Research Institute USA (HRI-US) is seeking a highly motivated intern to contribute to our research on human behavior and motion generation. You will prototype generative models that synthesize realistic, physically plausible movement—conditioning on text, video, motion, or scene context—and help deliver a polished demo. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to high-impact publications and patents.
San Jose, CA

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and prototype generative models for human motion
  • Develop conditioned generation with video or physics as output; explore goal-directed motion generation
  • Enforce realism via constraints, learned priors, or physics; evaluate with quantitative metrics
  • Build datasets and tooling: preprocess motion capture/IMU/RGBD/keypoint data; write data loaders, augmentations, and evaluation
  • Deliver a demo and document research and developments

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in computer science, eletrical engineering, robotics, or related majors
  • Proficiency in python and pytorch
  • Research or development experience in generative models and computer vision, computer graphics, or robotics
  • Good quantitative analysis skills

Bonus Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. students with strong research experience in generative models, e.g.
    • Controlled diffusion models for conditioned video generation or human motion generation
    • Other types of generative models, .e.g flow and VAE
    • Human motion capture
    • Human activity analysis or prediction with the usage of physical models
    • Perception for hands/objects and contact estimation
