Honda Research Institute USA (HRI-US) is seeking a self-motivated research int​Honda Research Institute USA (HRI-US) is seeking a a motivated and creative research intern to advance our work on adaptive and human-centric AI systems. This position offers the opportunity to explore novel methods for building intelligent agents that can flexibly operate in dynamic, human-AI collaborative settings. The intern will contribute to research that integrates insights from meta-reinforcement learning, meta-cognitive modeling, and grounded foundation models to support agents capable of fast adaptation, robust decision-making, and meaningful human interaction. The project emphasizes developing systems that foster effective long-term teamwork between humans and AI.ern to join our Cooperative Cognition Team in developing adaptive AI systems that can operate in complex,human-AI collaborative environments. The intern will help design and implement AI agents with metacognitive capabilities, focusing on areas such as multi-agent systems for long-horizon tasks, test-time scaling, and rapid adaptation to individual preferences. This work will advance robust, self-adapting systems and lay the foundation for AI partners that quickly learn new tasks, adjust to evolving team, and cooperate effectively with humans.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and evaluate algorithms for adaptive learning, focusing on generalization across diverse tasks, environments, human preferences, etc.
  • Design and implement methods that enhance contextual understanding, intention recognition, and communication between humans and AI agents.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design, implement, and analyze advanced frameworks for multi-agent coordination and human-AI teaming.
  • Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Currently enrolled as a Ph.D. student in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field at a reputed university (exceptional M.S. candidates with a minimum of 1 year of research experience may also be considered.
  • Strong familiarity with RL, Meta-RL and modern foundation model training techniques.
  • Experience in open-source deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, etc.)

 

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with multi-agents settings (simulation testbeds, etc)
  • Familiarity with cognitive-inspired approaches to adaptive learning.
